<!-- TODO: needs to be combined with /wiki/Accuracy in some way -->

**Accuracy** defines how accurately a player is hitting [hit objects](/wiki/Hit_Objects) on a [beatmap](/wiki/Beatmaps). This value varies from 0 to 100%. Accuracy can be seen in the top-right corner while watching a replay or playing a beatmap.

# Abandoned Wasteland

The *Abandoned Wasteland* is a hidden sub-forum where old and abandoned forums are laid to rest. This sub-forum is only accessible to moderators who have the power to modify the forums. The instructions to moderators concerning it is: "Put stuff we do not really need in here." When a forumthread is said to be "wastelanded", it means that is moved here.

# Aspire

*Aspire* is a [beatmapping](/wiki/Beatmapping) [contest](/wiki/Contests) where the creators are encouraged to fully ignore the [Ranking Criteria](/wiki/Ranking_Criteria) and explore gameplay-mechanics that aren't typically used. The resulting beatmaps tend to be cosmetically appealing displays of absolute madness, but are often nearly impossible to play for average players.

# Authentic

*Authentic* is old slang for a beatmap that emulates a stage from the DS games in every aspect (song, settings, object placement, etc.). This term originates from a time where mapping was heavily inspired by the DS games. Nowadays, the term "authentic" has little meaning to mappers, as generations upon generations of mappers have been inspired by each other instead of the DS games.

*Away from keyboard* or **AFK**, is a term used when an active user walks off to do something else while they are still signed in. Bancho will mark users as "Idle" if they have been inactive for some time. Users may set custom AFK-messages with the IRC-client which automatically responds to any messages the user may receive.

# Beat

A *beat* is a period of time that songs can be divided into based on their [BPM](/wiki/Beatmapping/Beats_per_minute). A correctly timed [beatmap](/wiki/Beatmaps) will have each beat correspond to the song's rhythm, and a whole beat should fall between two white lines on the [timeline](/wiki/Beatmap_Editor/Timelines).

# Beatmap ID

*See also: [BeatmapSetID](/wiki/Glossary/BeatmapSetID)*

A *beatmapID* is a unique, incrementing number given to all uploaded difficulties of a [beatmapset](/wiki/Beatmaps/Beatmapsets). This number is shown on a beatmapset's beatmap listing page on the website. The beatmapSetID can be found in the url of a beatmapset on osu! web as the second set of numbers, or in the `.osu` difficulty file. Beatmaps will only be assigned a beatmapID once they've been submitted with the Beatmap Submission System.

# Bit Rate
Pennek marked this conversation as resolved.
Show resolved Hide resolved

*For regulations surrounding bit rate, see: [Ranking Criteria](/wiki/Ranking_Criteria)*

*Bit rate* describes the number of bits per second that can be transmitted along a digital network. Almost every music file contains something called a "bit rate". This means that a *higher bit rate* will generally mean *higher quality* (but bigger file size). Whereas, a *lower bit rate* will generally mean *lower quality* (but smaller file size).
Pennek marked this conversation as resolved.
Show resolved Hide resolved

Bit rates typically range from 96 KBps (kilobytes per second) to 320 KBps. You can usually check to see the audio file's bit rate by checking the file properties of that file. Another way to check is whether or not [AiMod](/wiki/Beatmap_Editor/AiMod) says that the audio file's bit rate is too big. If either appears to be true, this means that you will have to lower the bit rate. A few methods on re-encoding audio can be found at [Audio Editing](/wiki/Guides/Audio_Editing).

# Break

*Breaks* are sections of a [beatmap](/wiki/beatmaps) which have no [hit objects](/wiki/Hit_Objects). During this time, the drain of the health bar is temporarily halted. Breaks usually allow the player to rest their arm for a short while and reposition their input device.

Depending on settings, letterboxes may appear when a break is initiated. In addition to this, a passing or failing graphic and sound will appear and play to indicate if the player is doing well or not. This will only appear if there is enough time for the graphic to show.

# Time-distance equality

*Time-distance equality* is the idea that spacing between [hit objects](/wiki/Hit_Objects) is proportional to the duration of time between them. Also known as using a **constant distance spacing**. This idea is especially useful for lower difficulties like Easy and Normals where variable spacing may throw off players.
Pennek marked this conversation as resolved.
Show resolved Hide resolved

To ensure time-distance equality on a [beatmap](/wiki/Beatmaps) the `Distance Snap` button on the right-hand side of the [editor](/wiki/Beatmap_Editor) can be turned on. You can change distance snapping values by holding down `Alt` and sliding the selector at the top-right or by scrolling the mousewheel. Note that higher values will have the player move their mouse farther.
