Tutorial: Ubuntu Installation
Our current system is using ROS Kinetic which is most compatible with the Ubuntu 16.04 OS. The best approach is to install Ubuntu with Windows dual-boot. That means that you need to split your hard drive into two partitions: one for Windows and one for Ubuntu. You can switch between the two every time your machine boots up. Other approaches like using virtual machines haven't been tested and are not recommended. To install Ubuntu, you need to prepare a USB stick or a blank DVD.
Ubuntu version: 16.04 (make sure to download the 64-bit version which is compatible with Olin laptops)
Follow this instruction, except that you should use the Ubuntu version above instead of other versions mentioned in the article: https://www.tecmint.com/install-ubuntu-alongside-with-windows-dual-boot/.
In summary, there are 3 basic steps:
- Download Ubuntu 16.04 image and burn it to a USB stick or a disk. You can use isotousb to burn the .iso image to a USB stick.
- Partition your hard drive for Ubuntu. You'll need at least 80Gb, or you can just split half and half.
- Reboot the machine and instruct the BIOS/UEFI to boot-up from the DVD/USB to install Ubuntu.
