ICL Time Machine Backup

We provide a network-based Time Machine backup service for Apple computers that are connected to the UTK network. If you do not use an Apple Time Capsule to back up your Apple computer, you should configure your computer to use this service.

Configuring ICL Time Machine

First, you will need to contact [email protected] to get a username and password for the backup system.

Initial setup

On your computer, you need to make a one-time connection to the backup server by going to the "Go" menu in the top bar of the MacOS X finder and selecting "Connect to server". Then type in the server URL afp://timemachine.icl.utk.edu/ and connect.

It will ask for your username and password. If authentication is successful, a new window will pop up with the new storage are mounted. You can close this window.

Configure Time Machine

Once connected to the server, open the Time Machine preferences and turn on Time Machine. Click on "Select backup disk" and select the "Time Machine" disk that corresponds to the server connection that you just created. At this point, your backup should be configured and the computer will initiate the first backup in a few minutes.

Checking the backup

Time Machine will only start a backup or restore session when you are connected to the UTK network. You may configure Time Machine to run only at certain times, but do not completely turn it off. We recommend testing the restoration of a file by going into Time Machine and restoring a test file that you have previously created and deleted or modified. If you get error messages from Time Machine indicating a failure to back up, do not ignore it. Make sure the problem is fixed promptly or contact [email protected] for assistance.
