386bsd0.x

Track updates to 0.1 by William Jolitz

W.I.P.

An ongoing attempt to create a disk image running https://github.com/386bsd/386bsd/tree/0.1 in an emulator. The results are pushed to https://dugoh.github.io/386bsd0.x/. The build log is at https://travis-ci.org/dugoh/386bsd0.x. That isn't always readable due to the ANSI codes, so there is a link in there at the bottom to an aciinema asciicast of it, for example https://asciinema.org/a/c6qmJ85fHjuWQtWHewZnS0W1f.

Some self imposed and boundaries, goals and liberties:

  • Use modern widely available emulators as soon as possible.

Getting the original 386bsd 0.1 to boot in emulation was done with hacked up or older versions of bochs and qemu. Ideally 386bsd 0.x should run on widely supported builds of bochs/qemu or VirtualBox or even in the browser on one of the js x86 emulators.

  • Hardware free development

This repo will mostly grow by abusing the github.com text editor -> Travis CI -> gh-pages pipeline. Consequently the commit history will look horrible and you probably don't want to run the script anywhere except for a discardable trusty box.

  • Reproducible

By using Travis CI demonstrate this is not a one-off, and someone can use this repo as guide to build such an image.

  • Trivial code

No piles of C code, just well aimed shell fu and original material.

  • Fixes

Some things are hacked against the 0.x repo because I want the thing to be fully self-hosting with just a few cd/find/rm/mkdir/make incantations. Eg. for some reason the grotty sources are missing from groff in 0.1 (and in 0.x). They are pulled in from 0.0 to get "make world" going.
