pthread_mon - a simple tool to capture pthread events. pthread_mon is a small library that wraps up various pthread functions, allowing the times when a program blocks waiting for mutexes or conditionals to be recorded. The idea is that it's simpler to use than other methods of looking at threads (e.g. thread_db) and doesn't require root privileges to use. N.B: currently it assumes that it's being built for use against glibc, and is probably a bit Linux-specific. Building ======== Type 'make'. It should build a shared library 'pthread_mon.so'. Use === pthread_mon should be injected into the program being tested using LD_PRELOAD. For example: LD_PRELOAD=pthread_mon.so ./my_prog It replaces some of the functions provided by libpthread with its own versions that record the time when they were called, call the original function and then record when it returns. The recorded timestamps are stored in memory until a thread exits, at which point they are dumped out. By default the output data is written to stderr, this can be changed by setting the PTHREAD_MON_OUT environment variable to the name of a file where the output should be written. A '%p' in the filename will be replaced by the process ID of the running program. The output includes four columns: TIME THREAD_ID EVENT_TYPE ITEM RETURN_ADDRESS TIME is the time when the event occurred. THREAD_ID is the thread number. 0 is the main thread. EVENT_TYPE is a hex code describing what happened: 10 The thread finished waiting for a mutex. 11 The thread started waiting on a mutex. 20 The thread finished waiting on a conditional. 21 The thread started waiting for a conditional. 30 The thread signalled on a conditional. 40 The thread broadcast on a conditional. ITEM is the address of the mutex or conditional involved. RETURN_ADDRESS is the return address of the called function. If the program being tested includes debugging symbols, the return address can be fed into addr2line to find out where the function will return to. By subtracting 1 from the address, it's also possible (on x86 and possibly other platforms) to find the line that called the wrapped function. The perl script pmon_plot.pl is included to allow the results to be viewed using gnuplot. It converts the data for a specified interval of the pthread_mon.so output file into a data file that can be read by gnuplot. For usage, see the embedded documentation in the script (perldoc pmon_plot.pl). Wrapped functions ================= pthread_mon.so currently records data for the following functions: pthread_mutex_lock() pthread_mutex_trylock() pthread_cond_signal() pthread_cond_broadcast() pthread_cond_wait() pthread_cond_timedwait() To reduce size of the log, mutex events are only recorded if a mutex fails to lock immediately. Bugs / Limitations ================== Injecting code with LD_PRELOAD is a big hack. Use at your own risk! Currently no attempt is made to flush out event data while a thread is running. Given this, it's advisable not to let tested programs run for too long to stop pthread_mon.so from using up all the memory. The data is written out at thread exit by a thread cancellation clean-up handler. This may not be called on certain abnormal exits (e.g. signals) causing the data for that thread to be lost. Some of the functions that could block are not wrapped yet (barriers, spinlocks, semaphores). There's no fork handler yet, so calling fork() might lead to some odd results. It could do with a better way of viewing the data. Glibc's versioned functions made the wrapping operation rather complicated and glibc-specific. The build system really needs to scan libpthread to find out which versions of each function are present. Finding the return address uses gcc builtin functions.
