### What is Evangelism?
1\. Jesus taught that evangelism is like [farming]().
2\. Evangelism is not merely an event, but a [process]().
3\. Rather than different“kinds”of evangelism, most of the outreach activities we do are actually different [phases]() of the full evangelistic process.
4\. The disciple-making process includes the following 5 phases:
a. **Prepare** the soil of the heart with friendship and service.
b. **Plant** the seed of God’s Word with spiritual conversations or by sharing literature and media.
c. **Cultivate** spiritual interest with ongoing Bible studies.
d. **Harvest** decisions by making personal and public appeals to follow Christ and be baptized.
e. **Preserve** the harvest with ongoing discipleship training of new members.
5\. When understood properly, evangelism, discipleship, and soul-winning are essentially talking about the [same]() thing.
### Inspired Insights | ||
“The seed is the word of God” (Luke 8:11).
“The fields are . . . already white for harvest” (John 4:35).
“The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few” (Matthew 9:37).
“Let ministers teach church members that in order to grow in spirituality, they must carry the burden that the Lord has laid upon them,—the burden of leading souls into the truth” (Christian Service, p. 69).

### How do we awaken people’s interest in spiritual things?
1. In Jesus’ parable of the sower, the condition of the soil is referring to the condition of the [heart]().
2. Jesus “went about [doing]() [good]()” (Acts 10:38).
3. Good works give our message [credibility]() and our message gives our good works [eternal]() significance.
4. “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your [good]() [works]() and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).
Through kindness and ministering to the needs of others, we can soften and prepare hearts to receive the seed of truth.
### Inspired Insights | ||
“The sowers of the seed have a work to do in preparing hearts to receive the gospel. . . . In Christlike sympathy we should come close to men individually, and seek to awaken their interest in the great things of eternal life. Their hearts may be as hard as the beaten highway, and apparently it may be a useless effort to present the Saviour to them; but while logic may fail to move, and argument be powerless to convince, the love of Christ, revealed in personal ministry, may soften the stony heart, so that the seed of truth can take root” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 57).
“Christ’s method alone will give true success in reaching the people. The Saviour mingled with men as one who desired their good. He showed His sympathy for them, ministered to their needs, and won their confidence. Then He bade them, ‘Follow Me’” (Ministry of Healing, p. 143).
“If you extend your soul to the hungry and satisfy the afflicted soul, then your light shall dawn in the darkness, and your darkness shall be as the noonday” (Isaiah 58:6-10).

### How can a local church awaken spiritual interest in its community?
Every local church should have **Churchwide Community Ministries**:
1. Choose a [leader]() who will be responsible for making sure the church remains active in community ministries.
2. Schedule regular [health]() ministry events—expos, cooking schools, free clinics, supper clubs, etc.
3. Discover other community needs by talking to [civic]() leaders (mayor, police chief, etc.) in the local community.
4. Conduct projects and ministries that build [relationships]() with those in your community and show that you desire their good.
5. Develop and plan so that [every]() member is involved in some way in these churchwide community ministries.
“No strings attached” means we don’t expect or require anything in return for helping others, but it does not mean we should avoid sharing the gospel. Salvation is still every person’s greatest need!
### Inspired Insights | ||
“As the garden must be prepared for the natural seed, so the heart must be prepared for the seed of truth” (Adventist Home, p. 145).
“When properly conducted, the health work is an entering wedge, making a way for other truths to reach the heart” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 6, p. 327).
“Christ’s method alone will give true success in reaching the people. The Saviour mingled with men as one who desired their good. He showed His sympathy for them, ministered to their needs, and won their confidence. Then He bade them, ‘Follow Me’” (Ministry of Healing, p. 143).

### When is the right time to introduce spiritual things?
1. It’s better to risk failure by saying something at the wrong time than to [guarantee]() failure by saying nothing at all.
2. We should share the truth with every [opportunity]() we have. “Blessed are you who sow beside all waters” (Isaiah 32:20).
3. Truth-filled literature should be scattered like the [leaves]() of autumn (see Testimonies for t he Church, vol. 9, p. 231).
4. In the parable of the sower, he scattered seed [everywhere](), and left the results with God.
### Inspired Insights | ||
“He who observes the wind will not sow, and he who regards the clouds will not reap. . . . In the morning sow your seed, and in the evening do not withhold your hand; for you do not know which will prosper, either this or that, or whether both alike will be good” (Ecclesiastes 11:4-6).
“In the parable of the sower, Christ gave an illustration of His own work and that of His servants. The seed fell upon all kinds of soil. Some seed fell upon poor soil, yet the sower did not therefore cease his work. You are to sow the seeds of truth in every place. . . . You may not at once see the result of your labors, but be not discouraged” (Testimonies for t he Church, Vol. 7, p. 35).
“Satan is now seeking to hold God’s people in a state of inactivity, to keep them from acting their part in spreading the truth, that they may at last be weighed in the balance and found wanting” (Christian Service, p. 37).
“The dissemination of the truth of God is not confined to a few ordained ministers. The truth is to be scattered by all who claim to be disciples of Christ” (Christian Service, p. 68).

### What can a local church do to plant seeds in its community?
Every local church should have an **Active Literature & Media Ministry**:
1. Choose a [leader]() who will be responsible for the ministry such as a local publishing director or a personal ministries leader or assistant.
2. Set up a [prominent]() and [robust]() literature and media display with truth-filled materials designed for sharing with the public.
3. In every piece of literature, there should be an [invitation]() to Bible studies.
4. [Every]() member should get involved in some form of literature distribution or sharing media over the Internet or social networks.
5. Churches should also plan [churchwide]() literature projects designed for mass distribution.
A literature and media display (1) provides free materials to church visitors and (2) resources church members for weekly distribution in the community.
### Inspired Insights | ||
“He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully” (2 Corinthians 9:6).
“Unvarnished truth must be spoken, in leaflets and pamphlets, and these must be scattered like the leaves of autumn” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 9, p. 231).
“If there is one work more important than another, it is that of getting our publications before the public, thus leading them to search the Scriptures” (Colporteur Ministry, p. 7).
“More than one thousand will soon be converted in one day, most of whom will trace their first convictions to the reading of our publications” (Evangelism, p. 693).

### What do I do if someone expresses spiritual interest?
1. The best way to lead someone who has shown an interest in spiritual truth is to invite them to take regular, weekly [Bible]() [studies]().
2. Like the Ethiopian in Acts 10, many people are looking for help to [understand]() what the Bible means.
3. The “Question and Bible Answer” method of giving Bible studies is something that [God]() gave to His people.
4. When people show a spiritual interest, what they’re hungry for is the [Word]() of [God]().
### Inspired Insights | ||
“As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious” (1 Peter 2:2).
“So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, ‘Do you understand what you are reading?’ And he said, ‘How can I, unless someone guides me?’ And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him” (Acts 8:30-35).
“In the experience of Philip and the Ethiopian is presented the work to which to Lord calls His people. . . . There are those in the world who are reading the Scriptures, but who cannot understand their import. The men and women who have a knowledge of God are needed to explain the word to these souls” (Christian Service, p. 142).
“The plan of holding Bible readings was a heaven-born idea” (Gospel Workers, p. 192).
“In visions of the night, representations passed before me or a great reformatory movement among God’s people. . . . Hundreds and thousands were seen visiting families and opening before them the word of God” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 9, p. 196).

### What can a local church do to develop spiritual interests in its community?
Every local church should have a **Vibrant Bible Study Ministry**:
1. Choose a [leader]() who will be responsible for the ministry such as a Bible school coordinator or a personal ministries leader or assistant.
2. [Choose]() one or two Bible study lesson series to keep in inventory and make easily accessible for church members to use.
3. Ask every church visitor or event guest, “Have you [heard]() about our Bible school?” Then, provide a sample study guide and/or Bible study sign-up card.
4. Local churches can also [generate]() Bible study interests using tracts, flyers, mailers, bumper stickers, yard signs, billboards, etc.
5. A vibrant Bible study ministry trains [everybody]() to be involved in some way—offering, advertising, hosting, and/or giving Bible studies.
There is great potential for growth if more members would get involved in Bible study ministry. There is power in the Word!
### Inspired Insights | ||
“Having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever” (1 Peter 1:23).
“The Word of God is living and powerful” (Hebrews 4:12).
“All over the world men and women are looking wistfully to heaven. Prayers and tears and inquiries go up from souls longing for light, for grace, for the Holy Spirit. Many are on the verge of the kingdom, waiting only to be gathered in” (The Acts of the Apostles, p. 109).
“The more one tries to explain the Word of God to others, with a love for souls, the plainer it becomes to himself” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 354).

### What can a local church do to consistently gain decisions for Christ from the community?
Every local church should conduct **Regular Public Evangelism**:
1. It is best to hold public evangelistic meetings [every]() year.
2. The first step in regular public evangelism is to get [organized]() for it. Assemble a team beginning with an overall meeting coordinator and one or two speakers, followed by coordinators for visitation, children’s program, registration, greeting, music, etc.
3. [Every]() member can be involved—praying, inviting, distributing flyers, attending, mingling, and/or assisting at the meetings.
4. To find those interested in attending we must [advertise]() through personal invitations, tracts, flyers, posters, mailers, billboards, radio, internet, social media, etc. Cast the net in every way possible!
5. To be successful, public preaching must be combined with [personal]() labor during the meetings—providing literature, making home visits, conducting baptismal studies, etc.
### Inspired Insights | ||
The Apostle Paul, speaking to the elders in Ephesus, described his ministry as a combination of public and personal: “I kept back nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed it to you, and taught you publicly and from house to house” (Acts 20:20, 21).
“If there is not a decided application of the truth to their hearts, if words are not spoken at the right moment, calling for decision from the weight of evidence already presented, the convicted ones pass on without identifying themselves with Christ, the golden opportunity passes, and they have not yielded, and they go farther and farther away from the truth, farther away from Jesus and never take their stand on the Lord’s side” (Evangelism, p. 283).

### When someone is growing in their understanding of God’s Word, what do I do next?
1. The reason many people don’t make spiritual decisions isn’t because they aren’t ready, but because we fail to [ask]() for decisions.
2. Jesus is looking for [laborers]() in the harvest field—those who will lead others to make decisions to follow Christ and Bible truth. Crops don’t harvest themselves.
3. Calls for spiritual decisions are not just made publicly—they should also be made in [one-on-one]() and small group settings.
### Inspired Insights | ||
“You do not have because you do not ask” (James 4:2).
“Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few’” (Matthew 9:37).
“When persons who are under conviction are not brought to make a decision at the earliest period possible, there is danger that the conviction will gradually wear away” (Evangelism, p. 229).
“After the meetings are through, there should be a personal investigation with each one on the ground. Each one should be asked how he is going to take these things, if he is going to make a personal application of them. . . . Five words spoken to them privately will do more than the whole discourse has done” (Evangelism, p. 285).
“With personal piety and a consistent course of life our earnest heart-felt appeals will be, through God, as sharp arrows of the Almighty to pierce the sinhardened heart, as sharp sickles to reap a precious harvest for the heavenly garner” (The Review and Herald, April 24, 1883).
“The secret of our success and power . . . will be found in making direct, personal appeals to those who are interested, having unwavering reliance upon the Most High” (The Review and Herald, August 30, 1892).

### When someone commits to Christ and joins the church, what more is there to do?
1. In the Great Commission given by Christ, we aren’t just called to make church members, but to make [disciples]().
2. [Everybody]() who becomes a disciple signs up to become a fisher of men (see Mark 1:17). A disciple is not just a watcher, but a worker.
3. An essential element of discipleship is to [invest]() in people. The learning takes place from mentoring.
4. We need to make disciples who [make]() [disciples]() in order to complete the process of soul-winning. Only then can we multiply our church membership instead of merely adding to it.
### Inspired Insights | ||
“‘Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen” (Matthew 28:19, 20).
“Then Jesus said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men’” (Mark 1:17).
“When souls are converted, set them to work at once. And as they labor according to their ability, they will grow stronger. It is by meeting opposing influences that we become confirmed in the faith” (Evangelism, p. 355).

“After individuals have been converted to the truth, they need to be looked after. . . . These newly converted ones need nursing—watchful attention, help, and encouragement.
