transform.inn2out(inn,out) changes values without being asked

I would expect a "simple translation" would read in a file and output the same 
file.  This is not what happens though.

It took my x12 856 4010 version 00401 file and converted it to a x12 856 4010 
version 00403 file.

Field separators were changed from "|" to "*" among other changes.
