About this pre-release

This is an early v2.x pre-release version aimed to gather some feedback on the newly rewritten (in SwiftUI) app Settings. This version fixes a bug in the previous pre-release that caused the app to crash on startup on some systems.

About this legacy app version

This is the last legacy (v1.x) app version with support for older macOS versions - Early Monterey (12.4 or lower), Big Sur, Catalina and Mojave.

Warning

This version does not properly support macOS Ventura and does not launch on macOS Sequoia!

For newer macOS Monterey, Ventura, Sonoma please use the v2.x app version. For macOS Sequoia, v3.x or newer is required.

About this version

This version adds the option to disable displays on Intel Macs as well (this is considered an experimental feature on Intel) and contains some other compatibility improvements, better fast user switching support (when BetterDisplay is running in multiple instances on the same computer) and various other minor improvements and bug fixes.

Notes about the experimental display connect/disconnect feature on Intel:

• On some Intel configurations issues might occur (misaligned/overlapping wallpapers, display issues especially when software-disconnected displays are physically disconnected or built-in display is disconnected). If the feature causes severe problems, you can safely disable it - go to app Settings/Advanced and uncheck the Enable connect/disconnect option for displays option.
• The feature on Intel is available on all supported macOS versions (all the way back to Mojave - on Apple Silicon the feature continues to require macOS Ventura).
• The backlight of the internal display is by default turned off by the feature, but the external display is only dimmed as much as possible on Intel and the display is not put to sleep (as on Apple Silicon Macs) due to platform specific constraints. Some displays support turning off their backlight via DDC - to use this feature when disconnecting the display, you need to enable Turn off display backlight when combined brightness is set to zero under Settings/Displays/(external display)/Show advanced control settings (see screenshot).

Notes about Mojave and Catalina support

• Support for these older systems is experimental.
• Testing was done on a 2017 iMac with AMD graphics - this is among the newer Macs still capable of running Mojave. The app might not run equally well on all legacy configurations.
• If your Mac is capable of running newer systems, it is advised to upgrade.
• In order to run the app on Mojave, the very latest 10.14.6 version is required.
