The default ChatLog interface is... bad. Making a new one is probably a huge undertaking. Might be worth talking to baslak (the guy who makes the Killroy RP chat addon) and try to work towards a unified improved chat interface.

My personal issues are:

  • Chat tabs don't preserve their order
  • Sometimes, splitting chat tabs into multiple windows has them merged back together on /reloadui
  • The chat window has a lot of visual bells and whistles, and is bigger than necessary.
  • Can not deactivate the input box in secondary chat windows, and the prompt does not fade out.
  • Can not select one out of multiple windows to chat in when you hit Enter.
  • Can not toggle channels based on events (who needs /zone chat from your city when you're in a dungeon?)
  • How does whisper-replying even work? Ctrl-R doesn't do anything. Right clicking on someone's name in a whisper and clicking whisper doesn't do anything either. Account whispers have yet to work for me.

Not being able to fade the prompt without fading the whole chat window drives me crazy. Also, not being able to reskin the tabs at the top really kills the aesthetic.

The entire chat interface is a mess, and that really bugs me. I wonder if we can annoy Carbine into fixing it up a little.

I can see that at least someone at Carbine shares our aesthetic. Look at the launcher. It's so much nicer than the UI. If we can coax them into making some changes, that would be awesome.
