Considering that hi / lo work (which are after all creative spellings for high / low) I think it's useful to have a rule of thumb for why these don't, IMO. It has to do with pronunciation: an English speaker would say hi / lo very similarly to high / low, but would say "ee" quite differently from the "e" in these words.
These lengths are only off by one if you use standard English spelling.
