HOWTO is what exactly we need for Phase 1, but for phase later, we might rig up a system where a webcam is positioned pointed down to perfectly capture any 8.5x11 paper you put under it. We then just use the same trick as we do to take the profile/badge pictures. I like the idea of not having to use 3rd party hardware (eg a scanner on another computer).

That is a really good idea. I can totally make a "document camera" work way better than a goofy scanner interface.

For reference:

this actually could be a stand alone project that we integrate with this project! The "DocuFace" project could:

  • be compatible with any number of decent quality webcams
  • allow you to point the camera horizontally to grab the headshot or vertically down to scan the document
  • have built in light(s) for the document, so there's no bad/harsh shadows
  • have simple plans to construct the device
  • have code snippets to use with php/python/node etc.

fun!

but, again, to be clear, for phase 1, just the howto for now ;)

I acquired an old Logitech webcam (http://support.logitech.com/en_us/product/webcam-c200) that we can hack into a document camera.

I have the UI for onboarding new members functioning pretty well. It allows you to either upload documents or use the document camera jig to capture them.
