As explained in #85 (comment) and suggested in #85 (comment) we could evaluate the benefit of using -fvisibility=hidden and LinkTimeOptimization on the overhead and enable those if it is worth.

The former is very low effort but has mainly effect on binary size while the latter is more elaborate but benefits performance
