"It seems to make a lot of requests, and also does them in sequence instead of in parallel

"Yes, here take a look at this waterfall diagram from browser dev tools (https://angelo.veltens.org/pictures/solidarity-requests.png). All the profiles are fetched one after the other instead of in parallel."

I'm not sure if this is API or UI side, or both but i'm sure we can make it work better.
