listenSelf in Ref extension for cacheData

ref.listenSelf got deprecated in favor of Notifier.listenSelf and I was using it for an extension to cache value in providers like this

  void cacheDataFor(Duration duration) {
    var link = keepAlive();
    var timer = Timer(duration, link.close);

    onDispose(() {
      timer.cancel();
    });

    listenSelf((_, newAsyncValue) {
      if (newAsyncValue is AsyncError<T>) {
        timer.cancel();
        link.close();
      } else if (newAsyncValue is AsyncData<T>) {
        timer.cancel();
        link.close();

        link = keepAlive();
        timer = Timer(duration, link.close);
      }
    });
  }
}

How can I keep this logic to not keep state in cache if last one state was an error and stop using listenSelf ?
