The Wellington Research Bazaar is a three day conference promoting the digital literacy emerging at the centre of modern research. In the spirit of a marketplace or bazaar, ResBaz is a highly participatory event where researchers from many different disciplines can learn new skills, showcase current projects, and share knowledge.

Researchers at all levels and from all disciplines are encouraged to apply.
Research technologists who support researchers to do their job are welcome also.

The Wellington ResBaz will be broken into two key streams: Code and Learn. There's also a drop-in Play stream.

Code is comprised of Software Carpentry courses where you can get stuck into learning the basics of research computing;

Learn has various sessions to introduce a range of interesting programs, tools, and research tips and tricks;

Play will allow for hands-on interactions with a number of novel technologies.

There will be speakers from all stages of their research careers in various fields, as well as highlights on up-and-coming projects.

Read more about the history and philosophy of ResBaz in these blog posts from The Research Whisperer and Software Carpentry.

The Challenge:
As a team, adopt a persona and scenario where open data can be used to inform decision making. Feel free to create any persona you like, or use the following options as a starting point:

You’ve recently graduated PhD student with a number of post-doc opportunities around the world (eg Zurich, London, Chicago)

You’re a campaign manager in a US presidential election trying to plan a successful campaign.

You are the newly-elected president of the United States

You’re an NZ high school leaver deciding whether to go to university (if so where?) or join the workforce. Where might you study or look for work?

You’re a recent university graduate, age..., looking for employment, minimum salary, lives in... (fill in gaps). Locate data to help focus job search.

You're a family buying a house, or building a house wanting to use data to inform decisions, eg solar or wind power, sun, shade, tsunami evacuation zones, schools, playgrounds...

Be specific to help bring your persona to life. Give them a gender, ethnicity, age, interests etc. For some ideas about what to do you could refer to overviews such as this one.
Nominate one or two team members to present your findings, ideally with a slide show or online tools rich with visualisations, graphs and data points to accompany your story and justify your decisions. You might want to use some of tools showcased at ResBaz (eg. R, TimeLineJS, StoryMapJS, Basic Story Map, Weebly, Qlik Sense, Python) or other easy-to-use online tools such as <a href=http://visual.ly/, infogr.am, Voyant, piktochart, or the tools outlined here<a href=http://govhack.org.nz/resources/2016-tools/.

<!-- 5 x5 Competition -

5 x 5 Lightning Talk Competition

Up for a Challenge? Communicate complex research concepts to a non-specialist audience in only 5 minutes and with only 5 static slides!
There are prizes…

Applications are now open to participate in a ‘lightning talk’ competition, which will be held as part of Victoria’s ResBaz 2017. Participants accept the challenge of communicating their research to a varied audience within a very tight format.

We are interested in hearing from any ResBaz participant who would like to try this format for communicating an interesting finding, a ground-breaking methodology, an unusual research concept, an innovative project—anything related to their research. The topic of the presentation need not be the result of digitally enabled research.

Presentations may be given by individuals or by teams.1

Interested parties should submit a 200-word abstract to by 5pm on 26 January to <a href=“mailto:[email protected]”>[email protected]. Late submissions will not be considered.

Evaluation

Presentations will be evaluated on how clearly and engagingly the presenter communicates the research, and how well the presentation operates within the prescribed format.

Prizes:

1st place: $100 Vicbooks Voucher

2nd place: $50 Vicbooks Voucher

People’s Choice: Recipient's choice of either a box of chocolates or a bottle of wine

A panel of judges will award 1st and 2nd place. The audience will be asked to vote for the People’s Choice award. Consequently, it may be possible for a place-getter to win the People’s Choice award as well.

Rules

Eligibility: Current Victoria staff members or students who are registered to participate in ResBaz 2017.

Time restriction: 5 minutes maximum. Presenters who reach the 5 minute maximum will be permitted to complete the current sentence, but must then stop.

Slides: Presenters are permitted a maximum of 5 slides, but may choose to use fewer. The slides must be static; no animation is allowed. The transition from one slide to the next must be automated—no manual clicking—but need not be evenly distributed across the presentation.2

Participants who exceed the time restriction or whose slides do not conform to the requirements outlined above will not be considered for prizes.

Resources

Like Pecha Kucha and Ignite presentations, your aim in this competition is to be as engaging and informative as possible, in a short period of time and with automated, static slides.

These resources provide excellent tips for designing and presenting great presentations within strict limits. Just ignore the information that pertains specifically to Pecha Kucha or Ignite formats and focus instead on how preparing one of these limited format presentations differs from regular conference presentations.

Felix Jung's Tips

1 Those considering entering a team should consider the added difficulties of a team presentation, such as the time taken up in the transitions between presenters.
2 For example, and assuming that the presenter decides to use the maximum 5 slides, he or she might programme the slides to change at 30 seconds, 90 Seconds, 150 seconds, 240 seconds and 290 seconds.
