Short circuiting the ETL flow

Hello,
I wanted to ask what is the recommended/idiomatic way to stop executing further workflow steps if, for example, we have a failed validation step?
Do we have to throw an exception or is there some special way for handling failed validation errors? In other words, how do you enter an "error path" and specify how it needs to be handled?
