Consolidate the contents of xc.conf, .xcmodem_boardid, and xcmodem_topology within /common into a single, all-inclusive config file. This limits the number of files that need to be tracked, and whose contents need to be recorded when an update to the firmware is issued and the user wishes to preserve their settings.
