The London College of Political Technologists at Newspeak House is the primary hub for technology and society in the UK, established in 2015 with the mission to study, nurture and inspire emerging communities of practice across civil society and the public sector.

We are proud to announce the inaugural Political Technology Awards, celebrating outstanding courage, excellence and creativity in the emerging field of political technology. These awards recognise extraordinary people and projects, and demonstrate the importance and potential of the field.

Nominations should be for projects that are transforming how the democratic ecosystem functions through their growing application or influence. They could be a blog post, a tool, a website, a service, a video, a dataset, a tweet, an experiment, a concept, an event format, a framework, a programme, a slide, a book, a collaboration, or something else - but a specific project, rather than a person or organisation in general.

Governance

Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown. This category recognises projects that help those with power wield it well, whether they be the admin of an online forum or the ruler of a country. Nominated projects might recognise new ways to monitor or engage a group or population, to develop legitimacy, to monetise effectively, or to develop and enforce policies.

Service Design

Doing the hard work to make things simple. This category recognises projects that pioneer new ways to improve the lives of the most vulnerable. Examples might concern service usability, discoverability, accessibility, privacy, security, cost effectiveness, reliability, agility, openness, or understanding and empathy for users. They might be groundbreaking techniques for user research, innovative user experiences, or novel ways to assemble and manage service teams.

Advocacy

First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win. This category recognises projects which have revolutionised how power is held to account. Nominated projects might include novel strategies for campaigns or activism, innovative techniques in publishing or investigative journalism, new approaches to messaging or targeting, or ingenious ways of uncovering where hidden power resides.

Transformation

Culture eats strategy for breakfast. Transformational leaders drag existing institutions kicking and screaming into the twenty first century - this award recognises innovation in ways to do this. The means to reboot cultures and processes could include popularising a new service standard, inventing a metric of success, a creative recruitment method, a mindset for navigating internal politics, or running a brave experiment, be it reinventing a small charity or transforming a whole government department.

Ethics

Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. How can technology help us approach moral dilemmas better, quicker, more fairly or more legitimately? How do we detect and measure happiness or suffering? How should an individual use their time or resources for the greatest good? Projects might include new ethical benchmarks or codes, decision making tools, moral frameworks, data or research methods that help us answer these fundamental questions.

Political Technologist of the Year

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. From all those nominated in the above categories, judges will choose an individual or team to be political technologist of the year. They are someone whose work is the gold standard, whose approach is worth emulating, and who is a leading light in advancing the field of political technology.
