ChatGPT Windows app does not automatically read responses after opening a new window #17566

Dear NVDA Team,

I am reaching out regarding an issue I’ve encountered when using NVDA with the ChatGPT application for Windows 10. While NVDA initially reads generated responses automatically, the process stops functioning when another window (e.g., Notepad) is opened and then the user returns to ChatGPT via Alt + Tab.

To restore automatic reading of responses, I must close the ChatGPT app from the system tray and reopen it. Restarting only the NVDA screen reader does not resolve the issue—only fully closing and restarting the ChatGPT app resolves it.

This means that every time I switch to another window, the ChatGPT Windows application stops automatically reading responses with NVDA. To avoid repeatedly closing and reopening the application, I have developed a manual method to continue reading responses without restarting ChatGPT:

  1. I press NVDA + F7 to open the dialog for links and headings.
  2. The first time, I press Shift + Tab to focus on headings and use N to select the headings list.
  3. I then navigate using Tab to the list of headings, press End to jump to the last heading, and hit Enter.
  4. I use NVDA key + Down Arrow to read the latest generated response.
  5. After the first time, NVDA remains focused on the headings list, so I only repeat the steps for navigating to the last heading.
  6. Once I finish reading, I press Insert + Space to switch back to input mode and continue typing.

This method provides a workaround but is far less efficient and requires additional steps.

I have tried various solutions to resolve this issue, including restarting NVDA (even in add-on-free mode), refreshing the window with NVDA + F5, and adjusting dynamic content settings, but none have worked. The problem occurs exclusively in the ChatGPT Windows app, whereas automatic reading works perfectly in the web version using the Edge browser.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could investigate this issue and suggest potential solutions. If more details are needed, I am happy to provide excerpts from my discussions with ChatGPT where I’ve described the issue and troubleshooting steps in greater detail.

Thank you in advance for your time and support!

Best regards,

Hi,

This might be caused by NVDA not keeping up with content scrolling (this can also be observed with Microsoft Copilot WebView2 app which is under testing).

We can proceed with further investigation if you could fill out the template to the fullest please.

Thanks.
