It would be cool if we could configure the dock more windows like.

On windows, when an application is running multiple times, I can see how much instances are running by counting the borders that are stacked. It'd be cool if we could enable a similar feature for this dock aswell. But I think it would be better to just display the count as a number instead of the frames. This is the way how Window List With App Grouping for Cinnamon, and I believe DockbarX does it. Ubuntu takes a similar approach as Windows in Unity by indicating it with dots. But I don't like this that much, too.

Additionally, it'd be cool to have a list of the windows when the user mouseovers the application icon. A simple list that displays the title of each window would be sufficient. A list with previews would of course be perfect.

Actually, a dock like the one on Windows, Unity, DockbarX or Window List with App Grouping is what's currently missing on Gnome 3 and what I can't live without anymore. It's just too useful when doing real multitasking.

What do you think?

How is this different from the "show indicators for number of windows of each application" that you can find in the appearance and theme section of the settings? Would you prefer a numerical indicator?

@micheleg Oh, I didn't notice this setting. It's exactly what I want.

But what's not there is a way to display a window list in a popup on mouseover, so you can reduce this feature request to the "additionally,..." section

So beyond the windows preview ( for future inspiration: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=661207), you thinks the popup menu or a reduced version of it should appear on mouse-hover instead of right click? Do I understand correctly your idea?

Yes, that's exactly what I meant ;)

I think it's a reasonable suggestion. The current method of right clicking and then clicking "All Windows" to get a preview is definitely overly cumbersome.

This is WIP #574, but not yet finalized.

Any work on the "hover the grouped windows to see a preview of them all" thing? :D . I miss than since I used Windows. Many times I have multiple instances of Firefox and would be really useful to hover the Firefox window and see all of the opened windows as pervious to quickly select which one I need.
