where, roughly, should the import/export button for the content appear?

Just a guess: System > Tools or System > Import/Export in the menu

I would, but I should be able to start using the extension first. to be clear: I cannot find a way to export content from the magento installation

I found where/how content is saved. But how can I import it back?
