How to setup a public Jamulus server

Hi to everybody,

I am just new here. Due to the virus we are forced to do our band rehearsals online. We use Jamulus for this and at times we have a public windows server online. I found Jambox as an precious alternative for the Windows Server. Basically I can start the Jamulus server contained on it, only I have to make the settings again after each start to publish the server.

Could anybody please help to setup a Jamulus public server ...

Concerning the file

/home/pi/.config/Jamulus/jamulus-server.conf

I don´t know, how to enter the values for the following values

NUMCHANNELS - due to hardware limitations the max. users should be 6
PORT - should be 22124
CENTRALSERVER_OPTION - should be " Genre Rock"
CENTRALSERVER - concerning the Jamulus Server List the server address should be ... jamulusrock.fischvolk.de:22424

Problem is, when i remove the hash from the certain line, the server doesn´t start.

@lignodelago I'd suggest you not remove the hash marks, those are comments intended to describe the settings.
At the bottom, add the lines you want (you don't need PORT, it already defaults to 22124).
I don't know the max users a Pi4 can handle, but you could leave it at 8 and reduce if it causes trouble.

I'm guessing your problem was setting "SERVERINFO" without enabling the 2 CENTRALSERVER items.

something like this:

Hi, I'm also trying to set up a public server, but I can't seem to get it to start up in the correct genre list.

I've enabled the two CENTRALSERVER items (as well as SERVERINFO):

CENTRALSERVER_OPTION=--centralserver
CENTRALSERVER=rock.jamulus.io:22424.

However, when I launch my server, it still always starts up in "Any Genre 1" (which is often full). The "rock.jamulus.io:22424" string ends up in the "Custom Central Server Address" field under Jamulus' options tab, where it doesn't seem to be doing anything. I can then change the genre manually, of course, but getting it right in the first place would be better!

(I've also tried it with "jamulusrock.fischvolk.de:22424", like in your example, with the same result.)

Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance, and thank you for Jambox, which was a breeze to install!

@rbrcht @lignodelago I don't think you're doing anything wrong. You attempt to register is probably being refused because the servers are full.

FYI in your example you have a '.' at the end of your CENTRALSERVER argument which may not hurt but should not be there.

Oops, yes, that must have slipped in there while copying. It's not in my config file.

I get the same log result as @lignodelago. We're both trying to launch Jamulus into the Rock server, which isn't full (I can register manually). However, despite the line CENTRALSERVER=rock.jamulus.io:22424 in the config file, Jamulus defaults to the Any Genre 1 server, which is full. Hence the initial rejection.

Like I said, it's not a huge problem, as I can always register to the Rock server manually! But it does seem like the CENTRALSERVER= argument doesn't work like it should?

Since today i am using the 1.3.... b2 Version of Jambox.
I tried to add the lines as you recommended instead of removing the hash signs. This seems to work.

Due to maximum number of participants the central server seams to be full.
Could you please advice how to set a genre server as default instead of the central server,

I want to use the genre Rock server with the address ... jamulusrock.fischvolk.de:22424

@lignodelago @rbrcht My startup procedure for jamulus-server had problems, thanks for reporting.

Jambox runs jamulus-server with the GUI, which allows setting most common options, and saves the settings.
I simplified the systemd unit file and the config file. Now the only options in the config file are PORT and NUMCHANNELS.
Everything else you should be able to set from the GUI the first time you run it.
I'll post an updated image fairly soon, but you can update these files as follows:

Thank you @kdoren, that works! The selected genre list, server name and location are persistent now. Great solution!

Just one thing before you post the updated image: in the config file, the commented-out NUMCHANNELS argument you provided has a lowercase "L". I initially didn't notice and just removed the hash mark, and it didn't work that way. This might confuse other users!

I just tried the new version. Made my Jamulus server settings. Rebooted and turned off and on again several times. It looks like the new version of jambox is saving the Jamulus server settings.

@lignodelago @rbrcht The Jambox 1.4.0 beta release has some definite improvements related to Jamulus server performance and stability. I suggest you give it a try if you haven't already.
