There should be shortcuts for opening/closing tabs (the shortcuts could be shown by underlining a letter in the name of the tab).

I also think there should be a shortcut for selecting a room could be very useful. This could work by:

when you start holding the shortcut, move the cursor to the center of the current room
while holding the shortcut and as you move your mouse:
imagine a line which goes from the center of the current room to the cursor
highlight the room whose centre is closest to that line
if you press escape, cancel the selection
otherwise, when you stop holding the shortcut, move to that room
