Use Cases

Click on video result from search and start playing in background mode so I don't have to click background for every search result I click on.

Proposal

Add a toggle setting in the settings menu to start videos in background mode by default

This is already possible. When you tap the Background toggle the current video and all videos will play in Background. While videos from other plugins and YouTube livestreams still show video, the media will continue to play in the background when you exit the app or after sleep/lock press

Another problem is when playing the next video source, toggle reverts to Background. Realistically you are still in Background mode. This is likely a bug that may or kay not be addressed. If you tap the toggle, Grayjay will go back to Video mode and the Background toggle will still say Background.

You can also define app behavior when playing media in settings.
