Is there any way to embed the SSL certificate and key into the binary and not load them from the filesystem?

I took a quick look into this, but didn't see anything obvious. I will continue to look, and maybe pass the question upstream.

There's currently a PR in the Paho C repo that seems like it would allow us to add this:
eclipse-paho/paho.mqtt.c#1328

If it lands there, I will add the functionality here.
