I read on the repo site of django-mptt that it is currently unmaintained.
Will this have an impact on this project ?

Likely yes.. :-(

Instead of trying to adapt this project, I'd favor if someone started a django-polymorphic-treebeard or django-polymorphic-tree-queries project or something alike that supports that particular base structure. The code of this project can serve as inspiration how to do that.
