Limited Asset index updates

I'll start with a screenshot from a client's test server... a terrible, horrible, no fun, very sad screenshot:

All I want here is to update the test server with the latest few image assets that were uploaded to the live server, without having to export & import the live DB. To that end, would it be possible to have some limited-scope "Update latest __ Assets" button alongside the existing one? Not sure if it's feasible to sort the remote assets by creation (modification?) date and just reindex the last 50 or so, but it sure would be handy to be able to do. Thanks!
