Rays exiting at the edges of an optical element

An optical element has some surfaces that are intended to interact with the rays of light (for example the spherical surfaces in a lens). But also it has some surfaces that are not intended to be used (such as the cylindrical surface or edge in a lens). If a ray crosses such surfaces a warning must be generated.
