Propose an OS we should consider

Although still Linux, creating some bit bake recipes for Yocto may be of interest, especially when a cryptographic coprocessor is in the mix. Hardware companies could then include Ockam in their base images.

That's a great suggestion, also Buildroot in that same vein.

I'd propose there are two facets to this answer:

1. On what OS do you envision most IOT deployments occurring? I suspect this includes at least a Linux derivative that covers a good starter set of solutions.
2. In what environments do you envision developers work? If the answer to docs: describe how to contribute code #1 is Linux, then the community versions like Debian and Fedora would be great starting places to play.

A bonus question for consideration is whether there's any business model in supporting phones at some point in the future, but suspect that proving everything on Linux would be a great starting point.

FreeBSD because of VNET jails.

Also, TI-RTOS because of SimpleLink and they contribute to the development of OpenThread.

• The linux variants - RHEL, CoreOS (also Linux ONE maybe?) can be targeted by LLVM and hence by Rust.
• I'm not sure if z/OS can be targeted by LLVM ... a few google searches led me to this post on the IBM blog

If you have access to machines with any of these operating systems, I'd love to know if you can compile Ockam Rust crates for those targets. Give the get started guide a try 😄

We use OE/Yocto for most of our projects -- I think it is a good fit for IoT as you can customize the image to exactly what is needed and there is good support for most embedded SOCs.

Creating a meta-ockam git repo might be a good start so people can easily pull ockam bits into their projects. It is best if meta-ockam can be general rather than being tangled in BSP and top level build -- IE, users should not have to download a 20GB POKY tarball to build something. See this episode for more information on this subject -- the thoughts on BSPs would apply to any other meta layers.

I've used Yacto before as well. I recently came across meta-rust and cargo-bitbake which would worth looking into as we think about meta-ockam
