Event Sourcing

Simple Explanation

Event Sourcing is an architectural pattern that involves storing the state of a system as a sequence of events rather than as a snapshot of the current state. Every change to the system is captured as an immutable event, and the system's state is derived by replaying these events in order.

Key principles and concepts involved

  1. Events: Events are the building blocks of the system, representing every state change that occurs. They are typically immutable and contain the data needed to understand what happened and when.
  2. Event Store: A specialized data store that holds the sequence of events. It is responsible for persisting events and ensuring their order is maintained.
  3. Event Handlers: Components that react to specific events, updating the state of the system, or triggering other actions (e.g., sending notifications, updating read models).
  4. Aggregates: Entities that encapsulate a set of events and business logic, ensuring the consistency and validity of state transitions.
  5. Projections: Projections are used to derive the current state of the system or a specific entity by replaying the sequence of events. They can also be used to generate read models for querying the system's state.

Advantages

  1. Auditability: Event Sourcing provides a complete history of all changes in the system, making it easier to understand how the system evolved over time and to meet audit requirements.
