From a user: I added a citation in the main field under my new page, "Barium (test)", but don't see it in the citations section at the bottom of the page. I was able to add additional references easily, though. Is there some sort of thing I should click or does it automatically add the cited paper to the citations list?

We discussed this in our weekly meeting. Joshua thinks that the user deleted the parentheses manually and re-added them. We discussed investigating how to make it hard to edit the parentheses.
I am going to wait until they fix a bug with escaping input on tui-editor v3 to implement this functionality. With tui editor v2 this is much more difficult to implement, however v3 makes this functionality a breeze. See the issue I opened on their repo: nhn/tui.editor#1658
