Among the discussed solutions is to add read-marker support. Which we did add previously but found to not work reliably enough yet. We are attempting to do that as part of #2137 in a probably better shape.

That said, it won't fix the problem for notifications on objects as the matrix-based read-tracking there isn't working for us (it has a linear idea of read tracking). We have introduce some read tracking on boosts, that we could potentially extend upon, but that is "public" to the group and might not be what we always want to do. If we want to be able to track better what comments and other internal objects have been read to be able to also remove notifications upon read, this needs some further thinking out.
