Among the proposals that I would like to submit in terms of software development I noted:
Add in the 'Color scheme' page of the Preferences, a button allowing you to create a personal color scheme under the name 'Custom' and offer to save personal modifications of one of the color schemes under a different name . This allows you not to lose the original color model (you just need to create a Personalized.ini file in the C:\Program Files\WinMerge\ColorSchemes folder starting from the 'default' model file).
Add in the Main Preferences page, just above the 'Import...' and 'Export...' buttons, a text 'Configuration backup and restore:' in order to clearly explain the purpose of these 2 buttons.
Add a button in the search dialog box (and the same in the replacement dialog box) to count the occurrences of an element contained in the file.
Add check boxes in the search dialog box (and the same in the replacement dialog) to search in the panel where the cursor is or another or in all open panels.
Show find and replace dialogs as a single box with two tabs allowing you to go from search to replacement more quickly.
I think also it would be very interesting to integrate a spelling checker with a multi-language choice in order to highlight input errors.
I very often work on application configuration files among other things and I also translate software and I often have to compare old versions with new ones.
I also noticed that despite the presence of text talking about updating the program, there is nowhere a menu or a button allowing you to test if the version is indeed the latest nor to download it or better to be able to choose to update automatically as soon as a new version is available.
I am aware that it is a lot of work, especially for the integration into the interface, but it is one of the points that I miss in this fabulous WinMerge software.
If anyone has ideas to further refine my thoughts and especially if a developer is able to make the program evolve that would be very interesting.
