Unlimited dimensions in xarray's NetCDF data interface are not properly written to a NetCDF file. When you try to open the encoded information from the created file again, information on unlimited dimensions is lost. There is a known issue in xarray: pydata/xarray#992
Keep track of the issue and adapt the code as soon as the issue with xarray has been resolved.
