Implementation wise, we will probably follow Popolo-spec (used in Politikus), as it can also capture nuances like organizations joining/existing and roles https://www.popoloproject.com/specs/membership.html

Network vs Coalition vs Collective: Understanding the Differences

While the terms "network," "coalition," and "collective" often appear interchangeably, they hold distinct meanings and applications:

Network:

  • Focus: Sharing and exchange of information, resources, and support.
  • Structure: Loose and informal, with no central leadership.
  • Formation: Organic and spontaneous, driven by shared interests or affiliations.
  • Duration: Can be long-lasting or temporary.

Coalition:

  • Focus: Achieving a specific goal through collective action.
  • Structure: Distinct groups maintain their individual identities while collaborating.
  • Formation: Strategic and motivated by shared interests or pragmatism.
  • Duration: Temporary, intended to dissolve once the goal is achieved.

Collective:

  • Focus: Working together towards a common interest or purpose, not necessarily a specific goal.
  • Structure: Individual identities may merge or remain distinct based on the collective's purpose.
  • Formation: Driven by shared values, beliefs, or circumstances.
  • Duration: Can be temporary or permanent, depending on the collective's nature.

Key Differences:

Feature Network Coalition Collective
Focus Sharing Achieving specific goals Shared interests/purpose
Structure Loose, informal Distinct identities Varies, merging or distinct
Formation Organic, spontaneous Strategic Shared values/circumstances
Duration Long-lasting or temporary Temporary Temporary or permanent

Remember:

  • Networks are for sharing and exchange, not necessarily for accomplishing specific goals.
  • Coalitions are temporary alliances formed to achieve specific goals.
  • Collectives encompass groups working towards a shared interest or purpose, regardless of duration or structure.

Understanding these distinctions helps navigate the dynamics and motivations of different groups.
