If we don't get back an array of messages on a call to /smile/all the app won't update it's message status

Ok, I know this is all hokey implementation, but in case nothing is happening, one might want to look into whether the call to /smile/all isn't returning what you expect. The app should log a message as such!!!! A toast at least.
