It looks like the installation really does some special things. The installation of MySQL seems cannot be gracefully removed. I am wondering if you might be able to help because manually trying to remove now has not been successful and trying to reinstall mysql natively is now breaking for me.
I've used dpkg -r mysql to one by one remove what existed, i deleted the init.d script and removed from rc but it looks like all the binaries exist in /usr/bin still and I cant get a new instance up because :
Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)
