It would be handy to be able to tell at a glance from a distance whether the substation is filling or draining or steady-state (at least when full).
One possibility would be to use the current animation in reverse for draining.
It would also be nice if this gracefully handled the case when the substation is full; currently the machine GUI seems to alternate between filling in draining every few seconds when it is effecitvely full.
