Support For 1.8+ Skins (slim model + overlays)

I was wondering if you guys thought it would be a good idea to backport their new skin system to 1.7.10. There are currently mods that do this already, one of them being SkinPort which I have adopted and used heavily in my playthroughs. I know you guys love to perfect things so just wanted to come here and discuss the possibility of supporting newer skins :3
