Discord threads are rolling out right now, and they're basically perfect for modmail.

I don't use eris, but I understand it may not have support for threads yet. I'm posting this here for when it does eventually™

Pros:

  • Threads specialize in this use case.
  • Threads can be archived, then easily un-archived later.
    • Maybe each user could have one thread with their full modmail history? The bot could un-archive it when needed.
  • The thread limit is separate from the channel limit, and there's no limit for archived threads.
  • People who use client mods (bad) can't see the list of threads like they can with channels.

Cons:

  • Not everyone wants threads to archive after only 1 day of inactivity. Longer times are paywalled behind boosting.
  • The bot would need a role or a list of people to add to the thread, since threads aren't shown automatically.

Sadly private threads are also paywalled, making the feature useless on a bunch of servers.
Adding Thread support at some point would be nice, but it might not be a priority.

It's still 100% possible to limit access to certain threads for free, just create them in a private channel. Only people who can see the channel will be able to see or join its threads.

This is similar, but different, from a feature request I just created: #801

The critical difference, if I'm understanding correctly, is this request wants to use threads within a channel, but my request would want to use posts inside a forum channel.

But given their similarity, I thought it would be best to link the conversations. They both think differently about how the bot organizes user-interactions with newer implementations of Discord features.
