Great to see the renewed Bunsenlabs!
Succesfull installation of Bunsenlabs on Acer 522 (Debian Bookworm core install). But no background desktop image as I have seen on older version of Bunsenlabs on the same Acer 522. Screen is now black.
Right mouse click and I can open and use almost everything, terminal, browser, vlc etc.
Only package locate errors in log for: bunsen-blop, -common, - configs, -conky (found conky in /usr/bin/conky), -docs, -exit, -fortune, -images, -archive-keyring, -numix-icon-theme, -os-release, -pipemenus, -themes, -thunar, -utilities, -welcome, -material-solarized-surplusplus-icon-theme.
How can I correct for these errors and how to get the original dekstop?

Hello @rene51
If you choose the "base" install (is that what you meant by "core install"?) then only the minimum packages needed for a working desktop are installed.
This list: https://github.com/BunsenLabs/bunsen-netinstall/blob/boron/pkgs-norecs-base
It includes some of the bunsen-* packages you report as missing so something has gone wrong.
You might be able to find a hint in $HOME/.cache/bunsen-netinstall-logs/install.log

If you want the full BunsenLabs desktop, I would suggest you try running the install script one more time, this time choosing the "full" install.

John, thank you for the reply. I attached the install.log file.
As you can see I installed Debian 12 Bookworm AMD64, core system (your words in HINTS) no root password and with only 'standard system utilities' marked. Choosed 1. full but same errors as before (see: install.log)
install.log
Hope you can see what went wrong or what I did wrong. Hope it can be fixed because the parts that do work like, e.g. web browser, thunar and terminal are super fast!
Regerds, René

Hi @rene51 sorry to be a bit late responding.
Anyway, the problem is visible on lines 188~189 of install.log:

Err:14 https://pkg.bunsenlabs.org/debian boron InRelease
Could not connect to pkg.bunsenlabs.org:443 (49.12.104.37), connection timed out

And the script reported an error at the end:

######## WARNING ########
'apt-get -o APT::Install-Recommends=true --quiet install' returned an error
------------------------------------------------

There was a problem installing some packages.
There may be some information in /home/rene/.cache/bunsen-netinstall-logs/install.log.
You might want to exit the script, comment out packages causing problems
in pkgs-recs, and run the script again.
If the missing packages are unimportant, you might prefer to continue
with the install and fix the issues later.
Would you like to ignore the errors and continue now,
or exit and try to fix the problems?
(press enter to continue, any other key to exit)

The problem was that for some reason the BunsenLabs repository server was down at that time, so no BunsenLabs packages were installed.

You can either wipe out the install and run the script one more time, or else just install the BunsenLabs packages now, on top of the base install you already have:

sudo apt install bunsen-meta-all

If you want the lite or base version, enter bunsen-meta-lite or bunsen-meta-base instead of bunsen-meta-all.

Before doing that, you can check that the BL repository is now online and properly configured on your computer with:

sudo apt update

and look for a line like:

https://pkg.bunsenlabs.org/debian boron InRelease

with no error messages.

Thank you John,
https://pkg.bunsenlabs.org/debian cannot be reached and in fact the site https://www.bunsenlabs.org seems to be vanished, and still is (at least a few weeks already since my first attempt)

The site https://www.bunsenlabs.org/ and repository https://pkg.bunsenlabs.org/debian are both definitely online.
I have just confirmed right now.

So that means there is a network problem at your end. If you can successfully connect to Debian then I wonder if your IP address might be being blocked by our server. Where are you located in the world?

Located in Netherlands. Can successfully connect to https://www.debian.org/distrib/

I can't think of any reason why our server should refuse connections to the Netherlands.
Do you have a portable computer? If so, could you take it to a different location, with a different network connection, and see if the BunsenLabs forum is available at https://forums.bunsenlabs.org ? A direct connection to the repository at https://pkg.bunsenlabs.org/debian will always fail, but an attempt to download https://pkg.bunsenlabs.org/debian/dists/boron/InRelease should succeed.

Otherwise, maybe you could ask a friend also located in the Netherlands if they are able to access the forum?

Another test you can do is try this site: https://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/bunsenlabs.org

If it turns out that only your personal IP address is being blocked then some more work will be needed. I'm afraid I will be away for a few days from tomorrow though.

This put me on the right track to solving the problem! I could have tested this from the beginning. My mobile has a different provider and could reach the bunsenlabs sites. Turned out the problem was on my end in the router, a simple reboot did the trick.
Thank you so much for your time to help me out!
Proves once again that when fault-finding leads to a dead end, you should reconsider your premature conclusion and take a different approach. I learned my lesson the hard way again!

Ah, once again I jumped to the worng conclusion. After the router reboot my laptop was still connected to my mobile phone hotspot so it seemed to be solved but wasn't.
With the mobile hotspot (and different IP address) I had no problem to reach https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/
Installation ran without errors.
So it seems my home router IP address is blocked on the bunsenlabs server. I have never been able to connect after I searched for 'lighweight debiab based linux' and tried the reference to bunsenlabs from https://www.techradar.com/news/best-lightweight-linux-distro.
If required I can send you my IP details. My provider is:
My IP Information:
ISP: KPN CM
City: Zoetermeer
Region: Zuid-Holland
Country: Netherlands (Kingdom of the)

To check if your home IP is being blocked on our server I will of course need to know what it is!
If you don't want to share it in a public post, you could send it to me in an email <my name> <the usual symbol> <the BL domain>
(Although of course a plain text email is almost as public as a post on GitHub...)
I might not have the free time to go into our server settings right away.

Is your IP shared by a number of other users, or is it unique to you?
If the latter, I would of course be interested if you have any guess why that IP might have got banned in the first place.

Can you get the IP which your home router uses to access the internet changed? If so, that might be a quicker solution.

Closing this because the issue seems to be at the user end.

@johnraff johnraff closed this as not planned Won't fix, can't repro, duplicate, stale Jan 15, 2025
