We should add a test suite with some basic unit tests to have more assurance that new features don't trigger regressions.

  • Create a test suite that can be run locally
  • Update documentation with instructions for running tests
  • (Stretch goal) Automatically run the test suite in GitHub actions

pytest would be the preferred tool for doing this.

Until we have this in place, we cannot consider the package ready for a v1.0.
