Why not use this place as well for general discussions and opinions.

What's the state of art for .gitignore files in our projects in relation to os- and/or editor-specific stuff? Should we add them generally just to be safe or should we assume that a potential developer is smart enough to have already a local gitignore with his os- and editor-specific ignores?

I've seen both in other projects, and I see pros and cons for both options.

Since there are pros and cons for both options, why not just keep it since we already have one to save us any additional work?
